Sure, the school year is still in session, but summer is on the horizon. Are you ready for summer family activities?
Summer is the perfect time to try new things and go to new places with your kids. We’re here with a few fun things to do this summer that you can try.
Keep reading to learn how to bond with your kids this summer.
1. Go Roller Skating
Are you looking for a fun new activity to try with your family? Roller skating might not be new, but it’s officially back in style. Adults and children alike are getting out into the world on eight wheels.
Skating can be dangerous, but it’s safe enough as long as you use proper equipment. Even if you feel confident, make sure that you and your children all wear knee pads, wrist guards, and a helmet (at the very least). You can also get elbow pads and cushions for your bottom.
Take this opportunity to get a great pair of skates for each member of the family. Cheap roller skates aren’t as safe or comfortable as nicer skates, so it’s worth the money. Don’t forget to choose good wheels (more info about buying skate wheels here: https://www.rollerskatedad.com/10-tips-for-buying-the-perfect-roller-skate-wheels/).
If you have young children, we recommend finding somewhere somewhat smooth and soft, like an unused basketball court or a running track with a springy surface. Roller skating is scary at first, but once you and your family get the hang of it, you’ll be zipping around your local roller rink in no time.
2. Take a Trip to the Beach
Summer is the perfect time to hit the beach. Whether you’re going to a lake or the ocean, it’s time to pull out the old bathing suits, gather some beach toys, and get out into the sun.
Make sure that your children know how to swim before you go to the beach. Swimming at the beach is less predictable than swimming at the pool, so you want your children to at least know how to tread water.
If you’re going to the ocean, teach your children about riptides.
Bring plenty of fun, age-appropriate activities for your kids. For younger children, you’re going to want things like buckets and shovels so you can make sandcastles together. For older children, bring bodyboards so they can get out into the water.
The beach is great for people of all ages. You can sit back and relax with a good book, and the kids can tire themselves out in the sand and water.
Just make sure to keep an eye on them at all times.
3. Visit a Museum
If the weather is too hot or rainy one day, take it as an opportunity to visit a local museum. There are likely museums within your own town or city that you’ve never visited before!
Museums give you a chance to teach your child something while they’re also having fun. They can learn about art, history, science, and an abundance of other topics depending on what you have available. You might even learn a thing or two as well!
4. Go on Nature Walks
When the weather is warm and dry, a nature walk (or a hike if you have older children) is a great way to bond and enjoy the outdoors. No matter where you are, there should be some form of wilderness within about an hour’s drive of you.
Make sure that you dress for the occasion. Hats and socks are essential if you want to avoid ticks and the sun.
Bring a few things with you to make the walk or hike more comfortable. You’ll want water, small snacks, bug spray, and a few simple first-aid items. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen!
If your children are young, we recommend making a scavenger hunt for them! Find pictures of local plants and animals that they might see on the trail and have them keep an eye out. When they find something, they get a point.
Make sure that you have a small prize back at home for when your children get a certain number of points.
5. Have a Picnic
Picnics are fantastic summer activities for families. You can even invite extended family members or friends if you have enough time and space.
Have your children work with you to make picnic foods. Make simple things like sandwiches that they can eat while they play outside.
Bring some fun outdoor games, like corn hole, so you can keep the fun going even after lunch is over.
6. Create an Obstacle Course
Do your active children love to run and play? Create an obstacle course in your backyard!
You can bond while you create the course and while you watch your kids conquer it. Build some DIY obstacles with your kids’ help.
Try to channel your inner “Ninja Warrior” showrunner. Test your children’s abilities and create a course that will challenge them (without hurting them). The best thing about DIY obstacle courses is that once you have the supplies and obstacles, you can mix and match them to create new courses whenever your child masters one.
7. Plan a Trip to a Nearby City or Town
If you’re out of things to do in your own city, plan a weekend trip to another nearby city or town. This is an affordable way to see something new that should still work with your work schedule.
Even if there’s nothing “exciting” in the nearby city or town, this is a great opportunity to show your children things that they’ve never seen before. You can visit new restaurants, go on new nature trails, and more.
It’s also a good opportunity for parents to take a break from their day-to-day lives. Even if you’re only an hour or two away from home, it can feel like a vacation.
